Paarl Golf Club in the Cape Winelands

Boschenmeer Golf Estate is the home of the Paarl Golf Club in the Cape Winelands and is the first 27 hole golf club in the Western Cape.

This historic Paarl golf course is the oldest golf club in South Africa and is located on the Boschenmeer Golf Estate surrounded by mountains, rivers and vineyards.

Boschenmeer Golf Estate has a pro shop as well as a golf academy and driving range.

Hole 1 - Par 4

A fairly gentle par 4 to start your round off with at the Paarl Golf Club. Aim your drive just left of the tall pine tree on the right. A water hazard is in play short right.

Hole 2 - Par 4

Although this par 4 is relatively short it is visually intimidating. The fairway is narrow and the Berg river on the right anxiously awaits a fade off the tee whilst a tall pine tree guards the left of the fairway. A wise decision will be to hit an accurate iron off the tee.

Hole 3

A very tight driving hole with trees lining the fairway. With the hole that doglegs slightly to the right you would like to favour the left-hand side of the fairway which will give you a better approach to this green.

Hole 4 - Par 3

A very picturesque but gentle par 3. Be aware of the pine tree in front of the tee box.

Hole 5 - Par 4

This par 4 of the Paark Golf Club will be testing with the wind blowing. The landing area for your drive is however wider than it looks.
When you reach the fairway take a moment to savour the tranquillity of the Berg River meandering so close to the fairway, there are no greenside bunkers but an accurate approach is required to this narrow elongated green.

Hole 6

A narrow driving hole. A good drive will however be rewarded with the possibility to get home in two. The front entrance to the green is very narrow due to two greenside bunkers. This makes running the ball up the green fairly risky. The back portion of this very long green is unsighted from the fairway and falls away at the back. This makes judging your distance with a back pin placement difficult.

Hole 7 - Par 3

The second par 3 around a very picturesque lake. The green is wide but narrow from front to back and will test your skill in stopping the ball with a long iron. With a pin placement back right, the smart shot is to the middle of the green left.

Hole 8

Make sure to check the pin position on the green before you tee off and plan your drive accordingly. An iron off the tee to the right hand side of the fairway will always be the smart play.
The green lies diagonally to the left and is quite narrow. A deep greenside bunker guards the front of the green.

Hole 9 - Par 5

A tree linked par 5 with lots of space for your drive. A good drive will put you in a position to reach the green in tow. It will however take some guts as the green is well guarded by a creek short and water right. The smart play is to lay up as close to the creek as possible and then attack the pin with a lofted iron.

Hole 10

Accuracy off the tee is crucial as the water on the left comes into play from 140m off the tee. The right of the fairway is lined with pine trees. A precision drive with a slight fade is required. A 3 wood or long iron is recommended. A good drive from the long hitters will make the green reachable in two. The two-tiered green is well undulated and slopes back to front and left to right.

Hole 11 - Par 4

A short par 4 with out of bounds on the right. Recommended club is a long iron off the tee aiming at the bunkers on the left of the fairway. A good straight drive will leave you with a short wedge to this hole. An accurate shot is required into this green as water lurks on both sides of this narrow long green. Make sure you have enough club with a back pin placement. The two-tiered green slopes back to front

Hole 12

This is a monster, so hit everything you have in the bag. Beware of water on the left side some 150m out. You require a well struck accurate iron into this green. The green is well guarded by bunkers front and left. With a front pin position it might be a good idea to lay up and go in with a lofted club. The green is fairly large with gentle undulations. It mainly slopes from left to right and back to front.

Hole 13 - Par 4

A short par 4 with an almost 90 degree dogleg to the right. Good course management is required on this hole. You need at least 200m off the tee to get beyond the tall pine trees on the right and have a shot to the green. Anything shorter will mean you will have to shape your second shot around the trees. The green is narrow and long and falls away to the left in the centre.

Hole 14 - Par 3

This is a short par 3 that wouldn’t require much more than an 8 iron. Accuracy is however very important as anything missing left or right of the green will leave you with a bunker shot or pitch to an elevated green. Beware of plugging in the bunkers. The green slopes back to front and has some subtle undulations.

Hole 15

This is a very wide fairway of the Paarl Golf Club with lots of space so let go with the driver. Hit your driver with a slight draw, this will leave you with a shorter iron into the green. From the fairway this green looks extremely shallow. More often than not it will be difficult to stop a ball on the green with a long iron or fairway wood. Settle for the left side of the green if the pin is struck behind the bunker.

Hole 16 - Par 4

A short par 4 that requires accuracy off the tee. Anything on the left side of the fairway brings the trees into play and will see you struggle to make par. The adventurous lower handicapper can hit a driver over the bunkers on the right.

This will leave you a very short chip into the green. The green slopes from back to front and left to right. Some very interesting undulations come into play when the pin is placed back left and you would want to keep the ball beneath the hole.

Hole 17

You need middle to long iron into a narrow “L” shaped green. A deep bunker guards a back left pin and a shot to the middle of the green is thus advisable. The green slopes back to front and left to right. Putts above the hole will be pretty quick.

Hole 18

This fairway is pretty wide and two fairway bunkers only come into play for the longer hitters. The better golfer can take the driver and aim to clear the right hand fairway bunker with a slight draw.
This will place you in the left-hand side of the fairway opening up the green for your second. Going for the green is not for the faint hearted. There is no room for error to the right and long will catch the green side bunkers.

Hole 19 - Par 4

A tough par 4 under any circumstances. Aim well left as the landing area is much larger than is perceived. If your drive is short it will take a brave shot it will take a brave shot over the water to get on the green safely.

Hole 20 - Par 3

A shortish par 3 that is well guarded by deep greenside bunkers. Pin placement in the front can be quite tricky, as the green falls away to the front left and most balls short on this green tends to gather there. The safe shot is to the back of this green were it opens up considerably.

Hole 21- Par 4

This par 4 is much tougher than it looks. The hole plays long especially with a south-easterly wind blowing. The fairway is guarded by fairway bunkers left and right whilst and obscured water hazard will catch long drives straying to the right. The green slopes significantly from back to front and is guarded by bunkers all around and water on the fight. With a front pin placement you definitely want to be below the hole for an uphill push.

Hole 22 - Par 5

After your walk up the hill take some time to enjoy the splendour of the surrounding mountains while you catch your breath. In front of you lies a very scenic par 5 that doglegs down the hill to the right.
The smart play is to hit your second shot short of the fairway bunker. This will take all the trouble guarding the fairway out of play. The green is very wide but not very deep which will allow for some errors on your approach provided you have your distance correct

Hole 23 - Par 3

A very demanding par 3 that will cost you shots in a blink of an eye. The green is elevated and well bunkered whilst water and out of bounds also comes into play. Missing this green on either side will see you struggle to make par. The safe option on this hole is always middle of the green. Par on this hole is a good score.

Hole 24 - Par 4

A testing par 4 that plays short in summer, but long in winter. You drive is to a blind plateau with out of bounds in play on the right. The elevated green is difficult to hold especially in summer with the wind from behind.

Hole 25

The best hole on the Paark golf course and a real test of skill for any golfer. The fairway is lined with pine trees on both sides with a creek that cuts across the fairway about 80m front the green. The elevated tee box gives a beautiful view of what lies ahead. There are no bunkers around the green, but the green itself makes up for in difficulty.

Hole 26 - Par 4

A very scenic short par 4. Drive is definitely not the club on this hole. Your tee shot is from an elevated tee with water in play all along the left side of the fairway.
The green is well surrounded with water and anything missed left or long will almost certainly be wet. A very undulating green makes chipping and putting a challenge.

Hole 27 - Par 5

A very scenic and interesting hole to finish with. The hole doglegs to the left with water in play all along the left-hand side. Fairway bunkers on the right catch the drive down the right. A relatively short par 5 that puts a premium on accuracy.
